Upward Bound House Family Shelter Video

As most of you know I took part in the Upward Bound House project a couple of months ago. Here is a short video on the overall process. This video is from Lee Schneider who writes for the Huffington Post and a blog called SHELTER. In the video he does as great job of capturing the essence of the project and the hard work everyone put in to making the venture a success. Lee is also doing a documentary movie on shelters. The movie will focus on the right of every person to have a roof over their head….Happy Movie Watching Everyone!

….And yes, that's me in the video talking about how hard my hubby worked on the console in our room.

Jonathan Adler's New Store

When I heard that Jonathan Adler had opened a new store in my neck of the woods I just had to check it out. So yesterday I made a trip to Fashion Island and completely fell in love. The small boutique was filled with so much eye candy I truly felt like a kid in a candy store. To top it all off Maile the sales associate informed me they were having a sale on the display furniture. What stopped me from walking out with the Bond Console and the Baxter Loveseat you ask? Well, the truth is I haven't been feeding my piggy bank. I learned a valuable lesson yesterday Shoebox readers. "Keep your piggy bank happy and she will keep you happy".

P.S. I would like to thank Jonathan for donating some of his lacquer trays to the Upward Bound House project. I used one as a napkin holder and it turned out wonderful...Happy Shopping Everyone!

Before and After

As most of you know I love thrift store shopping. I love finding vintage pieces and bringing new life to them. I needed a great console to anchor my room for the Upward Bound House project so when I saw this piece at the thrift store for only $65 I just had to have it. My hubby did a wonderful job refinishing it. Lots of sanding, priming, and painting went into this console and it turned out beautifully...Don't you think?...Happy Decorating Everyone!

Upward Bound House Opening

Friday was the Upward Bound House Opening and we had a great turn out. There was over 300 people there to support this great project. I'm sad to say I didn't get a lot of pictures because I was in my room most of the time meeting people. There has been some wonderful write ups that I can point you to. Grace Hilton, Inhabitat, and EMI Interior Design Blog did a great job covering the story. They also have some amazing pictures. Some of my pictures are below but they are mostly of the designers that took part in the project. I wish I had a picture of every single one of them because they all did such an amazing job...Maybe that will be my new goal this week?...Happy Reading!

The Designers: Lead Interior Designer, Vanessa De Vargas from Turquoise, Erica Islas, Kelly LaPlante, Bridgid Coulter, Nicole Sassaman, Cory Pernicano, Linda Graveline, Jessica Brende, Nadia Geller, Rachel Winokur, TC Carson & Carlo Rios, Cozette Coffman, Christy Biberich, Elizabeth Bomberger, Typhanie Peterson, Rhonda Konowalow Angell, Melissa Capehart and Lynnea Schwieters.

Where To Shop- Empiric

Annie Crowninshield at Empiric has donated some great lighting, furnishings and accessories to the Upward Bound House project. I went to the store last week to pick up a table lamp for my room and saw some great modern and vintage items. They carry the kind of pieces you can't find at your everyday store. So if you love pieces that look like you traveled half way around the world to get them, then Empiric is the store for you....Happy Shopping!...And thank you Annie for all the help.

I will be lighting my room with two Zia-Priven twiggy table lamps and one of their pendent lights. I can’t wait to show you the pictures. So, if you have some cash stashed away and you love extraordinary lighting, Zia-Priven is the store for you…Happy Shopping!...And thank you Paul for your generosity.

Paint Job

I have a couple of furniture pieces I need to paint for the Upward Bound House project but the rain here in sunny California is messing up my schedule. Apparently If you don't let the primer dry completely your top coat of paint will start to crack. So instead of a 24hr drying period I'm on a 48hr drying period. I can't complain too much since I found this great drop leaf table with chairs on craigslist for only $30. More pictures to come, including a really cute desk I got for $10...Happy Redesigning!
