Campion Platt - Fabulous NYC Architect and Designer

I'm really not sure what took me so long to discover the New York
City based architect and designer Campion Platt.  His designs are
utterly gorgeous!  Not to mention that he has a great eye for space
planning and colors as you can see from the above image.  This is
New York City apartment and he has really put the available space
in the open living space to good use.  A signature of Platt's is luxury
and texture.  He always pays attention to fabric and texture.  The
above space not only looks chic but it looks very cozy.

Another look at that fabulous blue couch.

And the backs of the lush blue velvet chairs.

The dining area save space by using a cozy banquette
seating.  I totally want one of these for my own nook.

A statement piece of artwork
hangs above a cool console.

Built-ins in the study.

The study has orange as main color with the
seating and as an accent color in the lamp
and pillows.

Here is the second bedroom and the size of the bedroom is
really nice for NYC.  I adore the mirrored tri-level end
table used in this room.  Where can I get one?

And the master piece - the master bedroom which has gorgeous
large windows, a fluffy white bed and a comfortable yet chic
looking curved sofa.  What a great use of space.  Different
functions without the room feeling crowded with storage and
cabinets lining the wall underneath the windows.  This
bedroom has such a light, airy and cozy feel to it.

Outdoor space in NYC is always coveted and this condo has the
perfect amount of balcony space - enough for comfortable chairs,
table and champagne of course.  I'm now officially a fan of
Campion Platt's work.  What were things you particularly liked
in the design of this condo?

Study in Pink: Betsy Johnson's Former Pink New York City Apartment

Betsy Johnson sold her very pink New York City penthouse
apartment a while back but I think it's worth doing a post
on her over the top pink apartment.  I adore the yellow chairs
she uses in her dining room as shown in the photo above.
A very nice set of mid-century modern chairs if I must say
so myself.

The view from her penthouse apartment (listed at
1,660 square feet with a 1,000 square feet private
deck.)  Original asking price was 3.6 million.

Betsy had very cleverly sectioned her bedroom area
off with a black screen and pink chair and ottoman.

A different look at how she sectioned her bed from
the rest of the living space in her loft like apartment.
Love the huge pink rug she laid on the floor in this
corner of the apartment.

A more pristine bathroom in whites.

All the floors in the apartment are ebony which
really sets off the pink and other colors in the space.

I absolutely adore the hot pink chaise.  The black staircase
leads up to the 1,000 square foot private deck up top.

A closer look at at the entrance to the kitchen from the dining area.

I love that she mixed something very industrial like
stainless steel finishes with pink.  It's not a combination
most people would think of but it works in an eclectic
way.

To full size sofas facing each other with sheepskin
rugs makes for a very comfortable and luxurious
living area.

You can tell that Betsy not only loves pink but mid-century modern
touches like the lamp and coffee table in the sitting area.

At one point, Betsy had redecorated the apratment and
ELLE DECOR UK had featured her apartment in their magazine.

More pink!

 A Very cool portrait.

She went from pink to yellow at one point. Her apartment may be
over the top but you have to give her credit for being bold in her
taste.

Palmer Weiss' Home in San Francisco

Palmer Weiss is a fantastic interior designer who is based in
San Francisco.  Her home was recently featured in Lonny
magazine.  I first noticed her work when she created a teenage
girl's bedroom for the San Francisco Decorator's Showcase one
year.  Her use of color and chic-ness floored me and I proceeded
to dedicate a post to that room.  Palmer Weiss beautifully blends
modern colors with traditional furniture in a sensible way that
works for today.  I love the color that she chose for the wall in
her living room above.

Her dining room is neutral with pops of green.  My favorite thing in this
room is the green geometric and trellis like fabric she used on the more
traditional sitting chairs next to the console.

Here's a closer look at those gorgeous chairs.  She manages to
include many of my favorite types of pieces - garden stools,
gorgeous gold framed mirror and green Foo dogs statues.

The art piece is truly the statement piece here.  The lamp
really compliments and draws out the red in the painting.

Palmer is certainly lucky to have a husband who feels
comfortable enough with a purple floral headboard!

Their master bedroom has many cozy and personal items such
as family photos, bright sunlight and another gorgeous lamp.

I really think she has a knack for children's room because I
don't even like orange and I really love what she has done
with her children's bedroom.  Softly pink with a splash of
orange (from her daughters' favorite baseball team the San
Francisco Giants.)  The room is simple yet fun.  Love the
oversized portraits of the girls above each of the headboards.

Grass cloth for the walls is the perfect way to hide holes when
a lot of art and other things need to be tacked onto the walls.
It's a great solution that Weiss has come up with for a playroom.

Weiss also loves mid-century modern furniture and things from
that era.  The yellow side tables really make great a great coffee
table substitute in this case.  She's really great at weaving color
in without making one feel overwhelmed by it.  Her rooms are
always soothing.

Annie Kelly has done a previous book called Rooms to Inspire
which is absolutely fantastic.  Since Palmer Weiss' home is in
the city, I thought it would be fitting to share this book which has
more inspirational rooms from homes in cities.

So what do you think of Palmer Weiss' home?  What elements
of her style would you copy or steal?

Palmer was gracious and very kind to let me interview her about
the teenage bedroom she designed previously.  If you haven't had a
chance to see it, make sure you check out the room she designed here.

Mary McDonald's Interiors - Color Intense

This post is totally prompted by Mary McDonald's book on her
interior designs by publisher Rizzoli (they always publish stunning
coffee books with gorgeous photos - can't go wrong with them.)

I highly recommend this book for color inspiratin as Mary McDonald
is one of my favorite designers.  She has such a genius for mixing
colors and traditional interiors.
The following is just a sampling of her many many design projects
that she has completed over the years.

I'm sure many of have seen this gorgeous office before.
Inspired by the signature color of Tiffany's, Mary McDonald's
office has been published and posted about countless times.
It is one of the prettiest offices I've ever seen.

Here's another iconic room by McDonald that has been posted
about everywhere.  The colors and the wallpaper are to die for.

This gorgeous dressing room is straight out of the pages
of the book.  It's every girl's dream dressing room!  All
it needs is a tea set in the room.

Talk about a dramatic entrance.  Now that's a way
to use pink - don't be shy and go all out.

Many people know of McDonald's traditional style
with a twist of color - but she can also do modern.

Love the color palette for this modern design.

A black and white dining nook.

A brilliant hallway and wall with bright pops of orange.
The orange goes perfectly with the Zebra brown pattern
and light blue drapes and walls.

Mary McDonald bedrooms are simply dreamy.  A bed that
one wants to jump into is guaranteed along with drama and
romance.

The beds are usually the focal point in her rooms.  The floor
detailing on the side of the room is unique.

Definitely didn't forget the drama in this room with red walls!
The white tones the intense colors down and sumptuous fabrics
are used through out the room.

Talk about a romantic chinoise four poster canopy bed.  I have no
idea where she found this bed, but it's absolutely gorgeous.

I love the floral panels in the back with a bed that doubles as a
super luxurious lounging area complete with canopy.

Another look at the same room.  Notice the detailing of the painted ceiling.
McDonald never forgets to pay attention to ceilings.  She has such a way
of pulling all the different elements together.

Red is such a bold and dramatic color.  It is very easy to muck up a room that
has a large amount of a powerful color like red in it.  Mary McDonald strikes
just the right balance.

A highly popular romantic bedroom that I've seen many times.
It's easy to see why this bedroom is popular - it has all neutral
colors - but done up in a chic and posh way without sacrificing
any comfort.  It looks like what a bedroom should be - a sanctuary.

Such beautiful details...

The Allure of Style

If you like what you see in Mary McDonald's rooms,
I highly recommend this book.  It has tons of inspirans.
There is something for everyone - the details she puts
in her rooms are just amazing.
