Raise the Red Lantern...

I love them... anywhere and for any occasion. In winter I hang them outside in the garden to give that shot of colour and sense of surprise when all seems so bleak. In summer I can sit mesmerised watching the candle light bobbing along with the evening breezes.

These Chinese lanterns were found many years ago near Hollywood Road in Hong Kong, I carried them back to France and have been hanging them outside ever since. I had been inspired by the 1991 film Raise the Red Lantern, a film noted for it's most extravagant visuals. When I look out the window or stroll around the garden and see these lanterns I am immediately reminded of the sights, the smells and the tastes of Asia. The contrast between the two worlds could not be more marked yet these lanterns have found their way into our home; they conjure up sweet and sentimental memories and they are a part of the fabric of the garden.

Have a wonderful weekend, xv.
