Unique History

Last Friday I was lucky enough to be invited to brunch at Rose Tarlow Melrose House. The event was in honor of Rose Tarlow being named this years’ recipient of LACMA’s Design Leadership Award. At center stage of the event was an Art Deco table by Jock Peters, which will be part of the Decorative Arts and Design Department’s forthcoming exhibition, California Design 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way, opening October 1, 2011.

Thankfully Wendy Kaplan the Department Head and Curator, Decorative Arts and Design, of LACMA was on hand to tell us about the rich history of the table and its creation for the sports department of the Bullock’s Wilshire. You do remember Bullocks don’t you? (Is my age showing?). To learn more about Jock Peters and his table, make sure to mark your calendar with the exhibitions opening date. And who said LA doesn’t have history?

Another highlight of the event was the limited edition ceramic ivory vases Rose Tarlow Melrose House created not only in honor of the award but to also celebrate their upcoming 35th anniversary in 2011. Only 350 vases have been created and a percentage of the proceeds for all vases sold will be donated to the Decorative Arts and Design Council to support future acquisitions. At a price tag of only $88, this is a great chance to own a part of LA's unique history. All in all it was a wonderful brunch attended by a great group of members in the design community…Happy Friday Everyone!
